Review of Water (1985) by Nate W — 28 Nov 2008
While it may be a bit on the slow side, â??Waterâ?? is a sobering and heartbreaking movie that's well worth the time it takes. The music is exquisite and the lighting composition is simply gorgeous.
Director Deepa Metha carries an effective motif of vertical bars throughout the film to evoke the feeling of imprisonment felt by the widows living in the ashram. As a counterpoint, she uses the water to signify the freedom for which they yearn; uncontainable, the ultimate cleanser, the ultimate life-giver, and the ultimate resting place.
