Review of Watchmen (2009) by Charles P — 05 Jun 2013
Watchmen is in my mind one of the most stylish and clever movies that is based on a comic book.
"Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity... but who is watching the Watchmen?".
Look at this way, Marvel is a lot better in the movie industry, but when it just comes down to comic books I think DC has the gold. It's somewhat of a difficult challenge to make a movie based on some their characters. Watchmen however, has such a great way on expressing characters. It dives in to each one by one and we get to know more things. The trailer if this movie really didn't intrigue me because the look of it just seemed very dull, but I apologize to Director Zack Snyder. You've made one of my all time favorite movies and just a terrific super hero movie. And what balls you had to make this movie R rated. We get a a real sense of darkness through this film that goes really deep. I have to give a round of applause for the visuals in this movie because they are completely mind blowing. Director Zack Snyder did the same method for this movie just like he did it for the surprisingly good movie 300 back in 2006. Watchmen features great action, a dark plot, great acting, a spot on script and stunning visuals.
There are so many actors to name in this movie but if I were to pick my most favorite character it would probably go to Jackie Earle Haley for playing Rorschach who might just be one of the coolest characters I've ever seen in awhile. Since he was a good guy he still acted like he was on the dark side (not referring to star wars). Malin Akerman as Laurie Jupiter didn't really bother me but her character was a very important key to this movie. Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl at first looks a little goofy in the suit but you know he seemed to have fun with the role. Every other character all had a major part that made this movie worth watching. Director Zack Snyder needs to make movies like this and boy am I excited for the highly anticipated movie Man Of Steel.
Watchmen is a great look for DC. Its got so much creativity that it's complete art. No matter what you say this movie is fantastic because of the direction that it heads towards.
