Review of Waste Land (2010) by Angie R — 24 Mar 2011
"Exit Through the Gift Shop" may have received all the publicity, but there was another Oscar-nominated documentary this year that dealt with the creation of art. "Waste Land" is about workers at the world's largest landfill, just outside Rio de Janeiro; workers who wade through mountains of trash, separating recyclable material by hand.
Both "Exit through..." and this film satisfied my requirements for a good documentary. They were entertaining. They taught me something new. And they took a subject which might not seem interesting on the surface, and made it very engaging.
"Waste Land", however, has a greater depth and resonance, not to mention people that I would like to meet.
