Review of WarGames (1983) by García Linares M — 08 Jul 2008
One of the best computer fiction movies EVER! For one, the word "hacker" is never used. It's all shown as being very incidental instead of some kind of ubercool "hacker-like" crap (think Swordfish).
Another reason it's cool is because it's a fairly plausible premise - the system has if-then rules which it's following according to it's programming. The system isn't self-concious, or taking over the world, or hateful towards humans. It's following what it was programmed to do.
The most memorable quote is when Ally Sheedy asks John why the machine is asking him how he is, he replies, "It'll ask you whatever it's programmed to ask you." (As opposed to being a thinking human-hating self-concious computer).
The critical element that sets this movie apart is the lack of constant bombardment of the words "Artificial Intelligence", "Hacker", etc.
