Review of Warcraft (2016) by Nikos R — 03 Jul 2016
Warcraft is a movie that respects and tries to honor it's source material, all the while trying to be an entertaining epic. Sadly, the film's vision outreaches it's grasp. You can't help but admire the technical prowess put into the film.
The motion capture work for the orcs in particular needs to be commended. On the other hand, some of the cgi is rather noticeable and there is a lot of it. Warcraft tries to set up a vast and rich fantasy world, but this is largely where the film falters.
The pacing is uneven, there is an overabundance of characters and exposition. As a result, the character development is often rushed, while the perfunctory writing and some questionable casting choices only make things worse.
Moreover, as is the case with many modern blockbusters, it is more concerned with setting up a franchise than having a satisfying ending. Warcraft isn't a complete failure. It's competently made, with a few compelling characters and some decent battle sequences.
But while it may appeal to fans of the game, it doesn't offer the awe, excitement, emotion or substance we should expect from a fantasy epic.
