Review of Warcraft (2016) by Grayson F — 10 Aug 2016
Although Warcraft isn't great, it doesn't have to be for the viewer to have a very good time. If you come into Warcraft expecting it to be the next Lord of the Rings then look elsewhere. Yet, if you are looking for a fantasy movie with rich lore, then this movie might just be the one for you.
Let's look at some pros and cons:
Cons: The acting is passable at best. This is perhaps Warcraft's biggest struggle. There is a serious case of miscasting that took place and a lack of age diversity doesn't help either. Almost every main character appears to be between the ages of 25-35. You'll need to give the actors some grace because most of them will not win you over with their performance. If you do suspend judgement, you'll allow them to carry you through a straightforward and interesting story. There are multiple moments of "cheesiness" but such is to be expected in a movie like this.
Pros: Personally, I find Warcraft's story entertaining. Needless to say, it is steeped in fantasy lore and isn't afraid to show it. The CGI is some of the best in any movie to date and fits the Warcraft theme nicely. The action is exciting and a couple of moments you may find yourself on the edge of your seat.
All-in-all, Warcraft may not win any awards (except possibly for its CGI). It may even get a bit of ridicule for its acting. Yet, if you are one who appreciates fantasy, you would do yourself an injustice to miss out on this exceptionally fun movie.
