Review of Warcraft (2016) by Brandon L — 13 Nov 2016
Arguably a bit over-ambitious and at times hard to follow, Warcraft is a swords and sorcery film that fans of the genre will no doubt enjoy, easily forgiving its shortcomings. Fans of the game series will, of course, be delighted (and get into nit-picky arguments you don't want to be a part of.).
Thankfully, the movie never feels silly, self-indulgent, or cheap. It fully embraces its subject matter and gives audiences a fully realized, escapist, fantasy adventure with tons of brutal combat and magic to enjoy.
It falls a little short on the story side, since many scenes and locations seem to be stitched together to wink and nod at followers of the game, and because the orc dialogue is often hard to understand. (It's the tusks, you know?) The worst thing about the film is that audiences may walk away feeling that they don't really know what just happened on screen, but with a sense that they enjoyed it nonetheless.
My 4-star rating comes from a fan (though not a fanboy) of the game and more particularly of the film genre.
[MICRO SPOILER: It feels a bit unfinished in the end, as if they were setting up for a second movie or playing as a prequel to the in-game lore instead of just paying attention to making the movie you're watching.].
