Review of Warcraft (2016) by Dan H — 28 Mar 2017
Very entertaining film. The music and the CGI were both amazing, and the majority of the acting was good. Unfortunately due to the scope of this film, character development seemed rushed and we didn't have time to care about some of the characters (like Lothar's son) or the extremely rushed love interest between Lothar and Garona. Because of the rush of information, if you're not already knowledgeable about the Warcraft universe I can imagine being pretty confused at certain parts of the film. If they had split this storyline into 2 separate films (or possibly just kept the 40 min. of cut footage) it would've been a much more fleshed out plot. I mean after all, the audience base is fans of Warcraft games. Some of these fans look at Warcraft visuals up to 6 hours a day! I'm sure they wouldn't have minded a 3 hour long movie if that was the key to a better experience. Look at the Lord of the Rings movies, they are much longer than Warcraft and were still critically acclaimed. Just sayin'. That being said I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. It was definitely worth seeing it at the Theater to me, personally.
PROS.
-CGI was fantastic.
-Music is epic.
-Orcs were handled better than ever before in a fantasy epic (in my opinion).
-Fight scenes were great.
-Plenty of easter eggs for us Warcraft fans.
CONS.
-Rushed Character Development.
- Lothar and Garona's romantic subplot was rushed and unnecessary.
-You might need to bring a friend to explain who these characters are and why you should care about them if you're not familiar with the universe.
OVERALL.
7.5/10.
