Review of Warcraft (2016) by Hayden M — 26 May 2017
I've played Warcraft on and off since Warcraft 3. This movie was clearly targeted at fans who have played any Warcraft at some point. The creators used characters that are among the most well known in the World of Warcraft (haha see what I did there ;D) and as a result any amount of play time would result in someone seeing recognizable elements in the movie.
It also does a good job of representing both sides of the fight, because in the games the player plays as both sides and is sympathetic to both, a concept not usually used in cinematics, where there is normally a clear "good" and "evil".
They gave the audience Gul'dan, who is one of the most clearly evil characters in the franchise, to give the audience a "bad guy". There is a world of lore for the creators to explore and I hope in the sequel they take their time to really lay out a story line, potentially using the invasion of the legion in which thrall (Durotans son) is shown to unite the horde with the alliance in order to stop the fel legion invasion, giving the audience a more clear sense of "good" and "evil".
Overall I loved this movie and just wish it was longer. Oh, and that they didn't try to force the whole lothar garona love story in there.
