Review of Warcraft (2016) by Jake C — 27 Dec 2017
How can a movie try so hard to deliver fan service, its script little more than a deluge of references to the incredibly dense and robust Warcraft mythology, while at the same time engaging so little in what makes the Warcraft series (especially WoW) so massively popular? The movie reduces that world (of Warcraft) to just the division between orcs and humans, warriors and wizards, utterly foregoing any of the other races or classes that make the game so rich and enjoyable.
Where are the night elves or the gnomes? the trolls or the tauren? Where are the priests or the rogues? The film stupidly reduces that wealth of lore into a series of poorly fleshed out allusions, turning Warcraft into the barebones of just about any other fantasy universe one can imagine.
