Review of Warcraft (2016) by Julian R — 13 Aug 2016
If the critics are going to game the rating down to 29% (08/07/16) then I'm going to game mine up to 5/5.
The movie starts off a bit rough, it's like they fired the editor a third of the way through and got a better one. The movie smooths out and hooks you in. It has great character who all do something notable. There isn't just the one single, one man army, hero who does everything for everyone.
It could be better, it deserved 3hrs on the screen and the 2hrs was too short. If a 3hr directors cut gets released I can easily see the score go up for this one because it just needed a little more time to gracefully flesh out some of its ideas. It does things well but its not very graceful about it because it's always in a rush to finish all of its threads.
This is a movie about characters not heroes. It'll make you think about them and their sacrifices days after viewing. It deserved more from critics. A user score of about 70-80% has it about right. A directors cut could easily give it some grace and push it into 80-90% territory.
