True, this film doesn't quite compare to Spielbergs' other works, but that doesn't mean it isn't good! I liked the apacoliptic feeling of the 'war', and Spielbergs' message that there is more in a war than just guns and blood and hi-tech gadgets.
Now for the cons: [Spoiler warning] why didn't the aliens die of the bacteria when they first came to earth? They didn't really explain that. And what was up with that kid? He wanted to abandon his family just to watch the soldiers fight? Wake up man! You're about to die! [end spoilers].
Having said that, perfect way for Spielberg to return.
