Review of War of the Worlds (2005) by Scott A — 24 Feb 2013
The effects are great and I really dug the look of the Alien craft, not to mention the initial attack scene is fantastic. And there is a great little side plot when Cruise and Fanning hold up in a basement with Tim Robbins.
But the ending is AWFUL! And besides the first attack, we really don't see anything after awhile and the kid that plays the son was SO SO SO annoying and ungrateful.
It sets up interesting ideas, like using humans as fuel, but then never goes anywhere with it. And the way the Aliens basically beat themselves to a Morgan Freeman voice over is pretty silly.
Wish the film would've played more on the strengths it set up, and hadn't ended in sappy happy fun time cliche ending.
