Review of War, Inc. (2008) by Ryan H — 12 Oct 2009
This movie must have made a lot of people angry. While watching this, I kept telling myself that I wished I knew more about politics. I'm embarrassed to say this, but a lot of things went over my head.
Nonetheless, I got the majority of what they were trying to say, and whether or not I agree with it, they presented it in a comical but serious way. It's odd how these opposing ideas actually work in the film.
There are many moments in the film that are serious, but also want you to laugh. The war in Iraq and everything that the US has started for their own benefits are serious issues to the filmmakers, but they understand that great satires joke about their subjects.
This was perhaps too smart for the way that it was marketed. The cinematography was great. It captures a political satire, war shots, and comedic editing all at the same time. It's hard for me to describe the brilliance of the DP in this film.
Great performances all around. Hillary Duff was surprisingly hilarious and sexy. Joan Cusack does her crazy lady scene, which never disappoints. I haven't enjoyed John Cusack like this since High Fidelity.
And don't let people get to you, this is nothing like Grosse Point Blank other than a similar cast and Cusack plays a hitman. I give this one a 4/5.
