Review of War Horse (2011) by Jose M — 09 Nov 2012
.War Horse is not a masterpiece from Steven Spielberg as I expected it to be. It is epic, but not in the same category as in Saving Private Ryan. The film focuses a number character with horse prior, during, and after the Great War.
We see the horse when he was born up to the separation between him and his mother. We get to see who bought him and the ridicule the person suffered publicly with save the farm is on top. We then come to the stop of World War I where the horse is transferred to cavalry and noticed how technology alters the use of cavalry.
The film continues on as we see the horse making new friends as the war devastates Europe. We get a glimpse of life in the trenches and some fierce fighting. I would argue that War Horse is pretty good in terms of storytelling, but not strong in being gripping.
I found the directing to be above average. Yet, I like this film, so I do recommend it. Children of all ages could watch it and not to worry about the violence because there is no gore or carnage. There is a lot of corpses though.
I have wondered why this film was not as great as it looks, but then I found out later that Spielberg was making Lincoln with Daniel Day-Lewis. Hopefully Lincoln is a masterpiece.
