Review of War Horse (2011) by Alex M — 11 Oct 2014
This film's concept sounds like it's a cheap mix between E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Saving Private Ryan, but Steven Spielberg is someone who knows how to connect with his audiences. It's a film that tugs at your heartstrings for all the right reasons. Jeremy Irvine is great in his breakout performance as Albert, and the way he and his horse, Joey bond with each other is enough to melt the heart of even the toughest cynic.
Several great British actors like Peter Mullan, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston all appear in this film, and Steven Spielberg doesn't shy away from showing as much of the horror and hardships of World War I as he can within the confines of a PG-13 rating. It's a feel-good movie you don't have to feel guilty about making you feel good. 10/10.
