Review of War Horse (2011) by David M — 17 Nov 2014
Steven Spielberg's adaptation of a 'famous' children's book (so famous, I'd never heard of it), which has also been adapted for the stage (I'd heard of that version, though - mainly because Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, was starring in it!) which follows the story of a thoroughbred horse known as Joey: a horse that is completely unsuitable for the work it is originally purchased for (to work on a farm).
With the advent of World War One (roughly an hour in to the film), Joey is sold to the army - I must admit, it took me a minute to pace the officer he was sold to - with the rest of the film then following what happens to him in France before eventually being reunited with his owner at the end of the movie.
Despite being set during The Great War, and despite including the battle of the Somme in the movie, this is also surprisingly bloodless - perhaps that's why it got the PG-13 rating. There's no 'Saving Private Ryan'esque storming-of-the-beach shaky-cam here!
