Review of War Horse (2011) by Buggy B — 14 Jan 2015
I saw this in the theatre and disliked it pretty intensely. I have since seen the stage production and was quite fond of it, so I thought I should give the film another look to see if my feelings have changed.
No, they haven't really. If anything, I ultimately like the film even less. I am not a Spielberg fan. He is undoubtedly an immensely talented film maker, perhaps the most talented film maker of broad, mainstream entertainment of the last 40 years.
I truly love some of his films, "Jaws" in particular, and am very fond of quite a few others. I also really hate a lot of his films. He can be an immensely crass and manipulative director whose films are often the ultimate expression of a world view I detest.
"War Horse" seems to take everything I don't like about him, and forcibly insert it into the bowels of a good play. It differs substantially from the source material, and every single change seems designed to make the material more sentimental and less connected to the overall mood and feel of the play.
