Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Jake R — 17 Mar 2018
Andy Serkis deserves to be recognized, not only as the finest animation-based actor of all time, but as one of the finest actors of all time. That being said, 'WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES' is an overly long, unidentifiable finale to a series reboot that is already harshly divided among todays audiences.
I personally found its premise to be obtrusively complicated, with the action sequences repetitive and a story that develops poorly and slowly. The animation is wondrous by all accounts, but there still remains something lifeless in these apes, especially during said action episodes.
Woody Harrelson arrives in a criminally underutilized role as a captivating villain, but the fault with this film rests with the writers inability to invest in a more compelling story rather than the animation-heavy experience that we ultimately are provided.
