Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Tryasummersault — 13 Jul 2017
There are a few films I can't even put a numerical rating on to describe their sheer magnitude and level of brilliance. Those types of films are timeless masterpieces that move you infinitely and change you after witnessing their triumphant immensity.
I can assure you, War For The Planet Of The Apes belongs in that untouchable/unrateable category imo. When this prequel franchise started in 2011, I was intrigued yet somewhat cautious at the time. After witnessing Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, I was thoroughly impressed but yearning for more action as it was more of an intro and development into Caesar's character and the franchise overall and when looking back, it needed to be slower in that aspect for plotting/franchise building.
Then in 2014 when Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes blew my expectations away with fast paced intensity, insane action sequences, as well as some very emotional dramatic moments, I hailed it as one of the best films to come out in quite some time which I still believe true.
Koba's character was one of the best villain portrayals I've ever seen, and Andy Serkis as Ceasar was impeccable as he is in everything he does. Enter 2017 with War For The Planet Of The Apes as the epic finale to the trilogy.
From the beginning to end it is the epitome of an emotionally triumphant journey full of twists and turns along the way with every single emotion and feeling you can experience as a viewer. Every shot and every scene was executed flawlessly and acted to perfection.
It's the most beautifully scenic film I've seen with a wide array of visuals ranging from mountains, wilderness, and tragedy. The CGI and motion capture work on the apes is the best and most realistic of all time without question.
Andy Serkis proves once again that he could quite possibly be the greatest yet one of the most unknown actors ever playing the role of the iconic Caesar. The soundtrack is completely and utterly fantastic and sets the sonic tone throughout in an homage manner to the original films.
There is an amazing dichotomy between what's animal and what's human in morality throughout and it was fascinating. All in all this phenomenal classic conclusion encapsulates this particular rise/dawn/war ape trilogy as one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time.
A harrowing and adventurous tale of unity and honor through all obstacles, staying strong together.
