Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Jess_Hill — 27 Jul 2017
The third instalment of this trilogy had a high bar, given the quality of the last film, and ultimately this didn't disappoint. Serkis is magnificent as Caesar, and this is a performance that shows mastery of his craft.
The storyline is epic in scale and the cinematography is excellent, though some of the CGI is distracting, and the inclusion of certain comedic elements throws the tone and tension out of kilter, which is jarring on occasion.
Harrelson is excellent, if decidedly disturbing, and the portrayal of complex themes lends pathos to the story. An enjoyable film that will satisfy fans of the franchise. 8.
