Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Jake A — 30 Jul 2017
The conclusion to what is now my favorite trilogy ever is practically perfect, yes I could nitpick but the previous films built up so much goodwill and I have enjoyed watching the characters from the prior films on their journey so much I just don't care.
Firstly the special effects are perfect, highly detailed and get across the emotions of the apes across brilliantly. The cast is also solid though having less human characters this time around Woody Harrelson more than makes up for it with his intense and unpredictable character.
Steve Zahn as Bad Ape is brilliant as well as the cast returning from the previous films, special credit obviously going to Andy Serkis. The action scenes are also great with the finale being especially exhilarating.
I also love the plot and script which has many themes running through it and thanks to the solid direction it deals with those themes head on while not allowing the pacing to slack. Finally the score by Michael Giacchino shows why he is one of the best modern composers around as it enlivens every scene.
A massive shame that this isn't doing all that well at the box office as it more than deserves the success and I can't wait to see it again.
