Review of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) by Jay M — 14 Jul 2017
The movie was ok/poor. It started out pretty well and the battle at the end is mostly good. The ending feels hollow and is a letdown. Unfortunately, about a third into the movie, it then devolved into a comedic war movie with, at times, more emphasis on the comedy.
It couldn't decide what it wanted to be, "Saving Private Ryan" or "Stripes". The writers just gave up and threw stupid humor in. I get that funny moments help relieve the tension, but that's not what this is.
Steven Zahn's ape shows up as a comedic sidekick-and a poor one at that. There are unnecessary scenes put in solely to create poignancy in the very next scene. Woody's character is poorly realized.
He's not so much crazed, as he is focused. And they throw in a backstory to generate sympathy for him. What happens to his character makes no sense with what the movie established early on. This should've, and could've, been so much better.
This trilogy deserves a better ending movie to end with.
