Review of War Dogs (2016) by Joshua S — 06 Sep 2016
A debauched and politically pointed dark comedy, War Dogs is about a couple of former high school friends who end up as half-ass arms dealers to the Department of Defense. It's filmed in the vein of a Scorsese mobster piece, with clear influences from Goodfellas, Casino, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Miles Teller does decent work as a sympathetic everyman, a role he is most comfortable in. The show-stopping material is given to Jonah Hill as an obnoxious cocaine addicted sociopath and con-artist with a Scarface fetish.
His greed and continual destructive tendencies drive the plot of the movie. While it serves as an able lesson on a real-life story and a parable about the dangers of the industrial military complex, War Dogs does feel like a movie you've seen before.
This subject matter was done better over a decade ago by the underrated Lord of War. Nonetheless, it's a breezy picture with enough entertainment value to keep most audiences laughing. And cringing.
