Review of War Dogs (2016) by Mandela W — 17 Sep 2016
War dogs tells the story of two 20 somethings who partnered up for an unusual business opportunity, selling guns to the middle east per a government contract. Efraim diveroli and David Packouz were friends way back in the day. The split up for a little while as David went to Miami and was a massage therapist while Efraim began working out this whole ordeal that he would get his best friend in on later. The two of them meet at a funeral and from their the partnership is on. The two begin to make tons of money through selling arms for the Iraq war but like any business there is all kinds of drama involved. The craziest part of all this is that this really went down in real life.
This movie was pretty darn good. It's a pretty dope story of two actual young businessmen. Although things went sideways for them its still somewhat inspiring to watch someone taking advantage of a golden opportunity in the business world and learn the ins and outs. Definitely had its political messages in it as well. Pretty much that made this more serious than funny despite being called a war comedy.
Todd Phillips utilizes some of the same formula he's used in the hangover films while at the same time expanding his horizions and trying to paint a unique picture of this crazy story. Jonah hill was terrific as efraim he played him so well. It's the first time we see him as a sort of antagonistic character and he brought a lot of swagger to efraim as well as made him a bit of temperamental guy who's also manipulative. the funny lines from the film mostly came from him and his laugh was just to hilarious. Miles teller was pretty good but he got outshied big time by Jonah hill. Still though he made david his own here and portrayed him as a guy simply trying to provide for his girlfriend and baby. Great supporting role from Bradley Cooper in here as well.
I really liked the script it was well crafted story from start to finish. good cinematography as well. Definitely go see it two thumbs from yours truly.
