Review of Wanted (2008) by Jonathan B — 12 Jan 2014
This is a totally over-the-top fantasy action movie that is a real thrill-a-minute. James McAvoy plays Wes, a downtrodden office worker whose life is turned upside-down when he finds he has a hidden talent as a hit man.
He is recruited by a quasi-religeous organisation called the Fraternity that exists to bump off people according to mysterious orders woven as a code into pieces of cloth. Wes gains a confidence and lust for life that he never before had as his expertise develops, but when orders come through that he is to kill a man in a far off monastery he finds that all is not quite as he has been lead to believe.
This film is built around spectacular chases and effects with a fair amount of fantasy violence thrown in. Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman ably support and the direction is taught and well paced. Owing a deal to martial arts films and The Matrix this is a classy and preposterous bit of fun.
