Review of Wanderlust (2012) by Kristiana G — 15 Jul 2012
Fans of raunchy comedies get ready...Wanderlust may just be like one you've never seen before! A fun Hollywood duo (Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston) comes together nicely in this extremely ridiculous flick which adds another meaning to the term "quirky" and undoubtedly will score consistent laughs from all viewers. Fans of seeing the stars in more meaningful films may feel this one does not do them justice; though it remains irresistible, nonetheless.
This absurd yet entertaining comic vehicle starts on a realistic note with an attractive couple (Rudd and Aniston) facing tough decisions when they become unemployed. When they no longer can afford their miniature apartment in Manhattan, they decide to go on a road trip until something else comes along. As one situation after another becomes worse than the previous (most notably with Rudd's wealthy yet seriously annoying brother driving them to insanity), they eventually stumble across a rural commune where love is the prime object of everyone's lives and many other sacrifices seem minor in comparison. They eventually decide to settle there and conform to the "free love" thing, but not without some complications, which arise before long.
Another flick in the slapstick category along with a fine side helping of bathroom humor, those with a low tolerance for ridiculously imaginative comedies may find this one a waste of time and talent. Yet, those who enjoy a good chuckle every once in a while will surely find it innocuous and cannot resist laughing hysterically at some parts. Those who remember the 1998 film, the Object of My Affection may remember the two stars were also the leads there...but the scripts are extremely different, to say the least. Stay tuned through the end credits for some outtakes, adding even more humor to the film. Rudd's improvised "mirror talk" segment is a particular highlight.
