Review of Wanderlust (2012) by James D — 02 Aug 2012

Three reasons why I wanted to see this film, first off being Paul Rudd. Rudd is a very underrated actor in my eyes who has a lot going for him with his down to earth, guy next door comedic style. Secondly, Jennifer Aniston, enough said there.

Finally, director David Wain, the guy has a great directing style, and has down 2 of my favorite comedies in the past 20 years (A Wet Hot American Summer, and Role Models). Not to mention Paul Rudd starred in both of those movies so you know it is going to work out for the film.

The story is about a NY couple that flees the city when they lose their apartment and jobs and are trying to get back on their feet, so they resort to staying at a bed and breakfast, and get more than what they bargained for.

I'm not going to give away a lot, because I never do, but this movie has one liners almost the whole time. I think I had 20 one liners in the first 10 minutes of the film I busted a gut laughing over.

Besides Rudd and Aniston, the rest of the cast is perfectly chosen, the plot might seem a bit regular and predictable, but the movie works and is one of the funnier ones I've seen from the Apatow Production Company in a while.

There is also a pretty heart warming message that cracks through all the profanity and craziness that happens during the film, and I think that is a huge key into why this movie is a success. This will definitely be a movie that I have in my collection, and if you are any kind of Wain or Rudd fan, this is a must see for you.

Lots of improvisation was in this film, and sometimes that is the best, especially with an actor like Rudd who is perfect at it. Make sure that you watch through the credits to see some extra improv that wasn't put into the film, along with bloopers and mess ups.
