Review of Wanderlust (2012) by Margarita S — 27 May 2013
The idea behind this story is socially relevant and has the potential of being clever. A young couple hit hard by an economic downturn decides to seek refuge in a commune. The movie though relies heavily on cheap laughs which takes away from its cleverness.
Although cast members put in solid individual performances, there's nothing substantial that ties this together as a movie. With a thin storyline and lulls throughout, it ebbs and flows between occasional laugh to yawn.
Furthermore, about 2/3 in, Wain decides to throw in a 'risky' plot device to force a turning point. This plot device swings the movie into more serious territory (albeit rather briefly), that doesn't fit in well with its overall lightness.
