Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Jonathan A — 24 Aug 2009
Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman recounts his involvment in the first Lebanon War through vignettes and a series of interviews. An eclectic combination of animation (of the cell-shaded/rotoscoped, flash and cg breeds!) and authentic-interviews that make this one of the most artistically compelling documentaries I've ever seen.
While the subject matter is hard to watch, Folman doesn't sugar coat the gory details to his audience. The result is a very raw and personal insight into his perspective on a tour of duty with the Israeli army.
