Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Steven M — 08 Sep 2009
Ingenious in form, this animated documentary hit me hard. As well as it looking fantastic the true events it describes are often troubling, but always interesting. It deals with the complex situation in the Middle East.
The only criticism of the film itself is that, for the casual observer from elsewhere in the world, the background to the events is not well explained. I had to spend a hour looking up the Phalange party and "Bashir" etc, and discovered the reasons behind the pivotal action of the film. That said, I felt sad at the sheer waste of life we hear about continually.
Deep and dark.
