Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Private U — 12 Sep 2009
I worked in Shatila for a few months after I graduated from undergrad and my girlfriend is Palestinian. Admittedly, our expectations for the movie were not particularly high when we rented it. I think we both expected some type of Israeli propoganda piece.
Instead, we were stunned and shocked by the depth and honesty of this film. If a movie is criticized by far-right Israelis and Americans (which Waltz has been), but also banned in Lebanon (which it is), then you know that the filmmaker must be doing something right if he's pissing off both extreme ends of the political spectrum.
