Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Pinaki B — 14 Sep 2009
Not quite documentary and not quite animated feature, this bizarrely original Israeli film deserves the praise heaped upon it for its startlingly effective portrayal of a conflict most Americans probably wouldn't know the first thing about.
Whereas a 'standard' documentary may have the viewer conjuring images as spoken by one of the many eyewitnesses, this film uses its format to its advantage by keeping the recreations of what happened on the same terms as the interviews themselves, all the while drawing the viewer's attention to the stylized nature of memory.
It seems rare that content is so effectively fused with context, making it a must see for anyone planning to animate a film using reality as a direct reference.
