Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Marc L — 19 Sep 2009
If "Waltz with Bashir" was a Hollywood production, it would have received a nod for Best Picture of the year. It is certainly one of the best foreign films of the year and it should win, but the favorite seems to be "The Class" from France.
This film is unique, bold, visually captivating and if one word had to sum it up, a masterpiece. The animation is a mix of traditional, flash and 3-D a la "Waking Life" yet it manages to have its own identity.
"Waltz with Bashir" is an autobiographical documentary, of the film's director Ari Folman and his experience in the 1982 Lebanon war with the main focus on the horrific massacre of Palestinians by the Lebanese militia.
Unable to remember certain things, he recounts and reflects on his experience by conversing with friends and comrades that were with him during the war. Art director David Polonsky and Animation director Yoni Goodman bring about an urgency and realism to the visuals yet we still remain disconnected from the truth the way nightmares really are.
It deals with a subject matter that goes beyond romance, scandal, and mere escapism. It presents the complexities of war and the human condition, and how it effects and individual; a group of people; entire nations.
It is creative not only in its presentation but also its narrative with dream-like visuals that remain with you long after you've seen them. This film grabs you right from the start and slowly unveils its story and subtle brilliance, leading up to a shocking ending.
It manages to be eloquent and horrific at the same time. Yet, given the films heavy subject matter it still doesn't fail to entertain and even be funny at times. There were a plethora of great films in 2008 but for me "Waltz with Bashir" is now at the top of that list.
I hope more people get to out to see and experience this film.
