Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Peter A — 07 Nov 2009
This is an animated film about an Israeli soldier's experiences in Beirut and how he comes to terms with the harrowing images he has witnessed. The basic animation gives a surreal otherworldliness to what is a traumatic time and I think this like Persepolis is part of how Folman can tell the story. If its in animation then it doesn't seem quite as real and he can cope with it. Its a sort of psychotherapy for the director and as such is a little too personal at times. I won't say what happens in the final 5 minutes but it just brings home even harder the horror of war.
Disturbing.
