Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Joshua B — 11 Dec 2009
Waltz With Bashir is an innovative fusion of dreamlike animation and documentary style filmmaking with a brilliant soundtrack fused of orchestra, eurotrance, and punk rock. A detective story that plays out like a psychological tragedy, it is beautiful and haunting.
Ari Folman is daring in his acceptance of the personal responsibility of participating in war. The final shots of actual documentary footage are a visceral kick in the gut. You the viewer, once uncovering the truth, wish to sink back into amnesiac ignorance because the horrible realities of war--once experienced--are a nightmare from which one cannot awaken.
A brilliant film.
