Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by S S — 12 Dec 2009
An animated film whose focal point is September 16 - 17, 1982, when the Israeli army stood by as a Lebanese christian militia entered a Palestian refugee camp to commit the indiscriminate mass murder of close to 1000 people.
The first hour of the film looks at the psychological impact of war on soldiers who are usually depicted as macho and heroic by the media, with sepia tones contributing to the mood of dismal futility.
It is only in the last 20 minutes that the director draws us into the horror of the massacre itself, concluding with a harrowing finale of actual film footage taken at the scene of this calculated, cold-blooded act; chilling sights best not viewed by those easily impressed.
