Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Amber G — 08 Mar 2010
Beautiful and powerful, every frame in this masterful animation seems to have been carefully composed and every line in the dialogue carefully thought out. Slowly unveils through flashbacks the long buried nightmares that haunt former Israeli soldiers who were in Beirut in the aftermath of Bashir Gemayel's assassination.
Along the way, it shows the human and nonhuman casualties of the indiscriminate killing that went on during the war. It humanizes the soldiers without absolving them, and shows what it was like to be both doling out, and be on the receiving end of death.
Straightforward, nonpartisan, and deeply engrossing.
