Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Martin M — 09 May 2010

Fantastic - a really unique way of creating a documentary that was daring and challenging and comes off really well. The last part was slightly confusing after so much build-up, almost like a bit was chopped out, but that's a small thing and overall it's not that important.

The animation is unlike anything else I've seen. A really refreshing film experience together with a fascinating personal exploration of memory, and the motives emotions and brutal pointlessness of war. Whilst the recollections are current-day, the animation allows us to see what it was like then, including the intensity of different situations, but also, crucially, facial expressions which we would otherwise only be able to imagine.
