Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by Bill D — 22 Dec 2011
âWaltz with Bashirâ? is a bleak Israeli animated docudrama on the 1982 Lebanese war, culminating in the Phalangist atrocities at Sabra and Shatila. Director Ari Folman casts himself and other colleagues in deliberate recollections of their dreadful experiences.
The animation allows the viewer -- and perhaps the director -- a level of distance, until the filmâ(TM)s conclusion, which cuts to devastating live action film of the massacreâ(TM)s aftermath. The film is moving, plodding, and depressing, an important document, devoid of anyone or anything to admire apart from its confession.
