Review of Waltz with Bashir (2008) by First L — 31 Oct 2009
Excellent Israeli anti-war movie. It takes some of the feeling and music from modern American anti-Vietnam movies and applies that to the Lebanese-Israeli war of the 1980s. Very nice animation, which is very realistic and reminiscent of Persepolis, a similarly themed historic/political animated film. The story is about one man trying to recover his memories of a massacre against the Palestinians.
So are people still going to say this movie is anti-semetic? The argument is pretty much foolproof since this was an Israeli production. Some 30,000 Syrians, Palestinians and Lebanese were killed during the war. Many fled to Canada, and especially Ottawa. The Israelis lost 700 people in the war. Maybe not so much a war as much as an invasion. Many large towers were destroyed in Beiruit, which in turn "inspired" Osama Bin Laden to blow up the World Trade Centre. Whoops. History sure is cyclical.
