Review of Wall Street (1987) by Kaustubh S — 28 Sep 2010
First, the good:
-Oliver Stone succeeds in making a film that's solely about money manipulation pretty interesting.
-John C McGinley is comic gold and Hal Holbrook plays the wise old angel on Charlie Sheen's shoulder quite aptly.
-The Talking Heads/David Byrne & Brian Eno play a central role in the soundtrack (extra 1/2 star simply for this!).
Now, the bad:
-Lots of very overwrought acting moments-- Charlie Sheen getting arrested by the SEC and all of a sudden getting all emo on us/Charlie and Martin meeting in the hospital room after his heart attack/any scene that Daryl Hannah is in.
-By the end of the movie-- what did we learn? Although that's sort of the point, it ends too abruptly for anything to really sink in.
-I'd love to see a movie with a female character who is more interesting than any of her male counterparts. Certainly not in this movie. All the ladies (particularly Ms. Hannah) are all like "BUT ALL I CAWRE ABOUT ISZZ MONEY BABAYYYY".
