Review of Wall Street (1987) by Luisfelipe Z — 28 May 2010
Wall Street is a pretty good movie, that does a great job at demonizing capitalism (PS: I'm not against capitalism) and portraying the lives of those greedy business man that play with our money.
The reason why this movie has become a cult classic is because of Michael Douglas' famous performance as the corporate leader Gordon Gekko. Douglas steals the show as Gordon Gekko. He's a very down-to-earth villain, and I think that it's one of the strengh of Douglas' performance. This character could be easily played over-the-top, having a maniacal laugh, screaming all the time, but he has none of that, he's charming, intelligent and menacing. He's really fascinating.
Charlie Sheen is good but not nearly as good as Douglas, and that's one of the problem of the movie. The main character is overshadowed by another one, you really want to spend more time with Douglas but instead you have to hang out with Sheen. Daryl Hannah is okay as Charlie Sheen's love interest, I still don't understand why she was nominated for a razzie that year.
As an inside look of the daily life inside Wall Street, the movie is very interesting, but you might not understand everything that's happening.
Overall I recommend anyone to see Wall Street just to see Michael Douglas' incredible performance.
