Review of Walker (1987) by Stephen C — 26 Jun 2008
Alex Cox's lost masterpiece with a Script by Rudy Wurlitzer writer of Peckinpah's Pat Garret And Billy The Kid.
Cox uses the Film to mirror Regan's attitude to South America in The 1980's.
Ed Harris is Fantastic as William Walker a Man driven by his own destiny and desire to conquer the peoples of Nicaragua.
Cox fillls the film with his usual stock cast of actors and also adds neat little details such as Zippo lighters and Mercedes cars.
He also pays lip service to Peckinpah with his slo mo and brutal violence and crcking Joe Strummer score.
Brutally discarded by Universal Studios at the time and finally released to a huge critical mauling the film has become in my view more relevant than it was some 20 years ago an deserves to be re-viewed as an outstanding poltical statement.
