Review of Walkabout (1971) by John C — 29 Nov 2007
Nic Roeg was in top form when he made this classic. Bordering on existentialism, the film not only takes the main characters on a journey, but also the viewer. It is a compelling commentary on the epidemic growth of industrialization at the expense of nature and a study of the contrast between savage beauty and bleak, modern civilization.
Roeg's stunning shots of the desert landscapes that punctuate the Australian outback coupled with the beautiful melancholy of John Barry's peerless score make this one travelogue that will leave a lasting impression.
