Review of Walk the Line (2005) by Rainer K — 20 Aug 2011
If you like Johnny Cash that very well may be your favourite music biopic. Beside expected great music (with all the Cash classics of course) it has two strong lead performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon who both recorded all the songs featured in the film themselves - the latter is even better than the original. There are also lots of famous and beloved musicians of the 50s/60s in minor roles (Presley, Orbison, Lewis) - and it's great to see all the legends "together".
Although it only covers about two decades of his life and I'd have loved too see the later years too there's enough drama in this time to satisfy all Cash fans and film nerds.
As I already mentioned the music pieces are perfectly arranged and the acting is superb but it only reveals the difficult relationship between Cash and his father and the hard way how June and he came together.
It's definitely my absolute favourite in terms of musician's biopics although just another film based on the familiar formula of rise, drugs/descent and happy end.
