Review of Walk the Line (2005) by Zachary T — 03 Aug 2010
I completely adore Johnny Cash's music, especially his deep voice and contemplative lyrics. James Mangold took on the task of making an illuminating biographical film about Cash's rise to fame and the difficulties he faced in his personal life during that journey.
The script is largely based on the autobiography Cash wrote with Patrick Carr and this shows in the way the film is structured. It's basically an old fashioned by-the-boog biuography, but a prime example of one. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a plausible Cash and Reese Woitherspoon finally showed with her Oscar winning performance as June Carter that she could trancend her typecasting as a cute bimbo in teenage comedies.
Compelling, emotionally effective stuff that gives you an inside look at Cash's complicated persona and illuminates some of his most legendary lyrics in a new way.
