Review of Walk on the Wild Side (1962) by Joyce F — 28 Jun 2007
Saw this on TCM last night. Supposedly the first Hollywood picture to feature a major star (Barbara Stanwyck) playing a homosexual character. Stanwyck is the madame of a New Orleans brothel in love with one of her employed girls.
When the girl's old boyfriend tracks her down from Texas and attempts to rescue his long lost love from her sordid new life, her madame tries to intervene, with violent consequences. An irresistable offering of trashy melodrama, with fine performances, directed in the classical Hollywood style by veteran Edward Dmytryk.
Hanoi Jane also stars, who's never looked hotter. Ultimately a film about the importance of forgiveness and the redemptive power of love.
