Review of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) by Chads. — 24 Dec 2007
Is it too soon to make jokes about Johnny Cash? I think so, even though "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is meant to skewer the musical biopic more than the man in black himself. Cash fans may cringe at jokes about his legendary drug abuse and estranged relationship with his father.
Laughter transcends bad taste, but therein lies the problem with "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", a lot of the humor inspired by "Walk the Line" is simply not funny. The surreal, and unexpected use of gore will drop jaws.
It seems phoned in from another movie. Dewey also tries on so many musical hats, he never comes across as a real artist. The only songs that work are those in the country vein. Brian Wilson fans may bristle at Cox's "Pet Sounds"-influenced sessions.
"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a cold-hearted assemblage of obvious jokes that satirize the drug-addled life of a musical superstar, often without any heart or wit.
