Walk Hard was marketed poorly and unfairly blasted by critics. To be fair, they were still reeling from such spoofs as Date Movie, Epic Movie, Farce of the Penguins, The Comebacks, and Scary Movies 1, 2, and 4 (3 was pretty good, surprisingly).
These were some of the worst mainstream movies released in the latter half of the decade. To be fair, the genre was already on life support thanks to everything Leslie Nielsen did that wasn't Airplane or Naked Gun.
Let's face it, this genre doesn't have too many gems in it. For every Airplane there's ten Meet the Spartans. So Walk Hard was pretty much fucked right out of the gate, which is sad, because it's one of the funniest comedies of the last ten years, easily.
Not only are there tons of great one-liners and running gags throughout, but it parodies the rock star lifestyle perfectly. The most obvious allusions are to Walk the Line, but there's bits of Ray in there as well, as well as spoofs of all the major music periods, from Motown to punk to psychedelia and beyond.
Sure, it reaches into crude territory at times, but it always recovers before descending into just plain stupidity, and isn't that really true of all the great comedies? Delivery and charisma are what make or break even the best scripts.
Do yourself a favor and see this comedy.
